Obituary of Jarrell Glenn Burke

Please share a memory of Jarrell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jarrell Glenn Burke, of Pasadena, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2018. He is preceded in death by his mother, Claudie Jarrell; father, R. Glenn Burke; step-mother, Mattie Burke; sister, Ruby Burke; wife, Faye Burke; and wife, Marie Burke. Left to cherish his memory are good friends, Betty and Johnny Gauntt; along with other dear friends.

Jarrell graduated from San Angelo High School, going on to attend San Jacinto College and Lee College. He served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1954 aboard the Battleship USS Iowa in the Korean War.  Jarrell was a gunnery mate while in service. The USS Iowa is berthed in Los Angeles Harbor as a Museum and celebrated its 75th anniversary this past summer.

Jarrell and Johnny were invited on a Veterans Honor Flight to Washington, DC in October 2017.  They visited the World War II Memorial, the Navy Museum and the Korean War Memorial.  Much to Jarrell’s surprise, he found an etching of himself and his best Navy buddy on the memorial wall.  Johnny said that Jarrell was truly humbled by the etching when he saw it and it brought him to tears.

During his working years, he was a Safety Superintendent with Brown & Root starting in the 1970’s.  He was an active member with Scottish Rite and the La Porte Masonic Lodge #857. Jarrell was strong in his Baptist faith and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
