Obituary of Thelma Lucille Holmes

Thelma Lucille Holmes, 98, of La Porte, Texas, passed away on January 28, 2019. She is preceded in death by her parents Lizzie Mae Wilson and Bobby Roy Roberts; husband, Phillip C. Holmes; sons: Phillip Holmes Jr.; Jeffery Holmes; brothers: David Roberts; Marion Roberts.  Sisters:  Harriet Messer; Wynelle Fisher; Bobbie Fairman; Mena Dockens; and Laurie Roberts.  Left to cherish her memory are her sons, John K. Holmes; Timothy L. Holmes and wife, Patty; Christopher N. Holmes and wife, Nancy; grandchildren: Laurie, Shelley, and John; Tim and Eddie; David, Nathan, and Chris; Trey and Shantel; Lisa, Laura, and Christine, over 30 great and great great grandchildren, and a host of other family and dear friends.

Thelma's family migrated to Houston from near Collins, Georgia, during the Great Depression.  She graduated from Sam Houston High School, while always working at least one or two part-time jobs to help with the family's finances.  As a young woman, Thelma won a national beauty contest and was on the cover of Time magazine, which led to a visit from Hollywood to offer her the opportunity to go for a screen test, but she declined.   She was a devout Christian and mighty prayer warrior, strong and unwavering in her faith.  Thelma was a lover of The Word and shared her beliefs with whoever would listen.    She showered her special love so generously on her entire family, but also lavished her loving kindness over many, many years towards her church family as well.  She enjoyed spending time with all her sons, her grandchildren, great and even great great. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. 

A visitation and service for Thelma will take place at Clayton Funeral Home, 201 S. 3rd Street, La Porte, Texas 77571, on February 2, 2019. The visitation will begin at 12:00 pm and continue until service time at 1:00 pm, with Reverend Brian Christen officiating.
