Obituary of Peggy Farthing Long
Please share a memory of Peggy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Peggy Farthing Long, 84, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Evelyn Farthing; and her loving husband of 58 years, Charles Long. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Ken Long and wife, Jenna; daughter, Lisa Long DeHoyos and husband, David; sisters, Dixie Kowis, Ann Perisol; grandchildren, Michael Bates, Charles Bates, Reagan Long, Berkeley Long; and a host of other family and dear friends.
Peggy grew up in Pearland and was the oldest of three girls. She was active in school, and her accomplishments included being a drum major, Brazoria Queen candidate and graduating as Valedictorian.
Peggy married Charles Edwin Long and this began a love story that lasted 58 years until Chucks death. She worked at ExxonMobil downtown while Chuck went to school at U of H. In 1962 he got a job in CA, and they packed up and moved with their one year old daughter Lisa. While they missed their families, they loved living in CA and made many lifelong friends.
Peggy decided to go to college and graduated with a business degree. When given the chance to move back to Pearland in 1976, they moved into the Howard Tholen Long family home and took such pride in living in the home built by Chuck's great grandfather.
She and Chuck were founding members of the Pearland Historical Society, and she was the treasurer for many years and loved seeing old friends at the annual Luncheon. Peggy belonged to the ABWA which was a support group for local businesswomen. She had her own income tax business for over 30 years and her clients became like family to her. Peggy was a loving grandmother to her four grandchildren and took such pride in all that they accomplished.
Peggy had an amazing memory and kept up with all the birthdays of her family and her friends. She would call or email them faithfully, every year. She loved to travel and never met a stranger. She could start a conversation anywhere, with anyone, much to the amusement of her family. Peggy was a member of First United Methodist church her whole life. It was hard for her to pick out a Sunday School class to attend because she said, she had friends in all of them.
She leaves behind a legacy of what genuine love and kindness looks like. Her friends and family are lucky for having been part of that. Her kind and gentle spirit will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Peggy’s honor to Redeemer Church, 18218 Highway 6, Manvel, Texas 77578.
