Shirley Poland-Hadley, 75, passed away on April 17, 2011. She is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil L. Sparks and Grace Long-Sparks and brother, Virgil L. Sparks Jr. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, Mark Hadley; sons, Curtis L. Poland and his wife Faith, and William H. Poland and his wife, Sherri; daughters, Vanessa Poland Castro and Marion Poland Loftin and her husband, Dennis; second-mother, Lillian Sparks; brother, David L. Sparks and his wife, Susie; sisters, Patricia Sparks Rochat and her husband, Kenneth and Joyce Sparks Veilleux; grandchildren, Angela Loftin Hemphill, Brian Loscuito, Dawn Turner, Steven Loftin, Amanda Boyd-Smith, and William Herbert Poland III; great grandchildren, Paige Loftin, Colton Hemphill, Kylie Loftin, and Sydney Loftin; as well as a host of many other family and friends.
Shirley was a Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and also a Daughter of the Nile. She worked for 30 years as a Loss Prevention Specialist where she always enjoyed the challenge of her job. Shirley was fortunate to have good health for most of her life until the last few years. She was always busy; even after retirement and enjoyed her membership in the Brazoria County Democratic Club. Shirley was always willing to work the voting polls during elections. She loved to talk politics and even attended the Democratic National Convention when it was in Houston.
Shirley cherished all the opportunities she had to fish with her kids in Galveston when they were small. She was strong in her faith and loved her family dearly. Shirley was affectionately known as Grandma to all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a proud American who loved her country. Shirley will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
A visitation for Shirley will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 from 6 to 8 pm at Clayton Funeral Home at 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, Texas 77581. Funeral services will be on Friday, April 22, 2011 at 1 pm at Clayton Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Joiner officiating. Interment will follow at SouthPark Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley’s honor to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the charity of your choice.
