Obituary of Elizabeth Marvin Philbrook

Elizabeth Marvin Philbrook passed away on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, at the age of 87. She is preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Helen (Woodruff) Burt. Left to cherish Elizabeth’s memory are her husband of 67 years, Robert Philbrook; son, Scott Philbrook and wife Liz; daughters, Dr. Beth Kalnins and husband Edgars, and Linda Philbrook; brother, Woodruff Burt; grandchildren, Jacob Kalnins, Aaron Kalnins, Matthew Kalnins, Morgan Philbrook, and Jesse Philbrook; and a host of many other family and friends.
Elizabeth was born in Freeport, Illinois, and spent her childhood years there. She graduated from Freeport High School in 1954, and then attended National Cathedral School in Washington D.C. from 1954 to 1955. In 1956, Elizabeth married Robert M. Philbrook in Illinois, and together they moved their family to Northern Virginia in 1961. Later, Robert and Elizabeth retired to Pearland, Texas.
Elizabeth was a devoted mother, and grandmother who loved to spend time with her family. She would often prepare delicious meals for her family and friends and was truly a gourmet cook. Elizabeth loved spending time in the great outdoors, traveling the world, and experiencing new adventures. Preserving nature was important to Elizbeth, so she advocated for and helped to raise Monarch Butterflies in Texas. As a true outdoors woman and avid wilderness backpacker, Elizabeth hiked nearly the entire 2,200 miles of the Appalachian trail. She also enjoyed devoting her time to leading and training Girl Scouts and adult leaders in the Washington D.C. and Houston areas for more than 30 years. Elizabeth won many awards for her training efforts over the years, including a Lifetime Service Award. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
