Obituary of Elvia Maria Kentish Green

Please share a memory of Elvia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Elvia Maria Kentish Green was a beloved, remarkable, and inspirational woman whose life was defined by her boundless love, passion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to her family and loved ones.

Elvia, the matriarch of her family, was a woman of extraordinary strength and character; she was the glue that held her family together. A joyful soul, Elvia always exemplified grace under pressure. Despite the countless trials and challenges she would encounter throughout her life, she always emerged victoriously with laughter, a dance, and a story to tell! Her smile will be a warm memory that will inspire us all to dance, laugh, and share stories of her life.

Born on December 24th, 1941, in Colon, Panama, to Ignacio Kentish, a business-savvy cab company owner, and Violet Scott, a loving homemaker. Elvia inherited a deep sense of discipline, discernment, sharp intellect, and an innate ability to create a nurturing and caring home from her loving parents. Growing up in a rambunctious household of seven siblings, Elvia’s understanding of hard work and commitment stood out. These values would be evident in the household she would create with the love of her life, Frank Green. Elvia and Frank’s love blossomed into a partnership built on persistence, devotion, love, and passion. The couple wed when she was 21 years old. Elvia, a talented seamstress, designed the beautiful wedding gown she wore for the occasion. Soon after, Evlia and Frank welcomed their first two daughters, Nuvia and Francis. Frank migrated to the United States to pursue new opportunities and a brighter future, with Elvia and their daughters following shortly after. Their family settled in Brooklyn, New York, where they purchased their first home. That is when their third daughter, Ana, was born. Elvia and Frank worked tirelessly to raise their children with love and care while building a life for their growing family.

The Green family later relocated to Houston, Texas, and welcomed one more daughter, Yvette. Texas became the backdrop for many cherished family memories, including road trips, vacations, celebrations, and extravagant parties that strengthened familial bonds.

Elvia was a proud and devoted grandmother to Nathaniel, Brittney, Briana, Gavin, Elisse, and Xander. Though not hers by blood, she would also love Louis, Nigel, and Haile; and Alyssa, Julian, and Evan as if they were her own.

Elvia’s wisdom, warmth, and humor created a haven of love for her grandchildren, who will forever cherish the summers spent fishing, learning, and sharing in her stories. Elvia’s legacy is further extended by her first great-grandchildren, Autumn and Summer, who brought her immense pride and joy.

Elvia’s talents were as boundless as her heart. She was a skilled seamstress and a phenomenal cook! She would bring the flavors of Panama and her own creative twist to every meal. No one could match her fruit-filled desserts! Whether baking for the holidays or sharing her signature dishes, Elvia’s kitchen was always a place of comfort and connection.

Elvia’s life is marked by resilience and perseverance. She embraced each challenge life gave her with strength and dignity. Her story is a testament to the enduring power of faith, love, and self-reliance. Elvia’s philosophy that “only the strong survive” encapsulates the spirit of a woman who overcame every obstacle life placed in her path. She instilled this mentality into her family, encouraging us to tap into our inner strength to meet every obstacle.

Preceded in death by her parents, siblings, loving husband, and one of her daughters, Elvia’s legacy continues through the loved ones she leaves behind: her cherished children, Nuvia, Ana, and Yvette; her son-in-law Alieu; her loving grandchildren, Nathaniel, Brittney, Briana, Gavin, Elisse, and Xander; her precious great-grandchildren, Autumn and Summer; and her younger siblings Rogelio and Evaristo. May her spirit find eternal peace and her legacy continue to inspire us all.
