Obituary of Dorothy Fitzgerald
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy McCarthy Fitzgerald was born on December 3, 1920, the fifth of seven children of James Joseph McCarthy (the “Sooper”) and Bridget McCarthy. Raised during the depression, she reported her family always had food because The Sooper was a streetcar conductor and they had a family garden. She completed two years at Chicago Teacher’s College. Her first job was as a secretary for Peerless Air Conditioning, a company that made the first AC units for cars. Later she worked as an executive secretary for neurosurgeon Dr. Harold Voris in Chicago, a job that she found fascinating. She married attorney Thomas Francis Fitzgerald in 1962, and had one daughter, Lynn Frances Fitzgerald, in 1964, the same year her husband died. She volunteered extensively in the Chicago area, and served as President of the Service Club of Chicago, and as a member of the Lyric Opera Board, the Lincoln Park Zoo Board and other organizations. She was full of sage advice, including “never invest money in the stock market you can’t afford to lose” and “always read anything you are going to sign.” She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Lynn Fitzgerald, a neurosurgeon in Longview, Texas.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, Texas 77581. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 10:00 am at Houston Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Pearland, Texas.
