Obituary of Richard Eugene Nichols

Gene Nichols 83, of Pearland, TX passed away on October 8, 2012. He was born November 27, 1928 in Freeport, Texas to James Hollis and Amy Lee “Baba” Nichols.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patsy Ann Nichols, his sister Billie Agnes Todd and his parents.
He is survived by his son Michael E Nichols and wife Antionette of Lake Jackson, and daughter Lee Ann Nichols of Houston. Gene has two granddaughters Lindsey Nichols of Kyle, TX and Katherine Nichols of New Rochelle, NY. He is also survived by his dear friend Francis Culbertson and many other close friends.
Gene was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, camping, golf, softball and travel. Among his most cherished passions was mentoring with young people volunteering many years coaching little league baseball, little league football and the scouts.
He was a graduate of Shriner College where he helped to found the original golf team. After attending Shriner, he went on to graduate from Sam Houston State University. After college he served his country in the US Navy. After the Navy, he returned home, married Patsy and they moved to Houston to raise a family. He is a retiree of Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation. In “retirement”, he spent a number of seasons working for the Houston Astros and playing softball.
Many will remember him as an enthusiastic volunteer always ready to lend a joyful hand.
His love and kindness will be deeply missed.
A viewing and gathering will be held at Clayton Funeral Home in Pearland, TX on Friday, October 12th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Graveside services are Saturday, October 13th at 10:00 am at Restwood Memorial Park in Lake Jackson, TX with Pastor Dr. Bob Joiner of First United Methodist Church of Pearland officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church of Pearland.
