Dan and Al Ortwein (above) rented a house in Baltimore with me and another Coast Guard officer
and a conscientious objector in 1968. I was a green ensign and Dan was like a good-natured, worldly big brother. He introduced me to jazz, not “smooth” jazz, but cool jazz. I recently found some reel-to-reel tapes I made from his albums. I didn’t take to it then, but eventually I turned to jazz years later, just like the Chivas Regal he offered me at the time. More recently he has been sending out e mails with links to geographic sites, and some quirky cartoons and jokes. You never knew what was going to pop up on the screen. I was happy for him when I had heard he married Wilma and had a son Danny;
he deserved to be happy. My condolences to you
Wilma and Danny on your loss. May your memories of Dan comfort you.

I am honored to pay tribute to my brother, Dan, by sharing some of my memories of him.
He grew up the oldest of four siblings on a farm in Iowa. I think that is where his love of vegetable and flower gardening came from. He always said “it’s good to get a little dirt under your fingernails”.
I recall him always enjoying music. He enthusiastically played bass drum in our high school band. He was an avid reader and could “lose” himself in a book for hours. He majored in political science at the University of Iowa and loved to discuss world affairs. I am proud that he served his country as a member of the United States Army serving in Korea.
One of his great joys and talents was visiting with people. He loved a good joke and had many to share. I will miss his laughter.
He was so excited when he met Wilma telling me what a wonderful person she was. She has been a loving and devoted wife and he told me often how thankful he was to have her in his life.
He was such a loving and proud father. His letters and conversations were filled with stories about what Danny was saying and doing.
The thing that will stay with me forever is not so much what he did, but who he was. It has been an inspiration to me to witness the grace with which he endured his many physical trials these last five years. We communicated often during this period and not one time did I hear him complain or express bitterness. I was amazed and touched by his perseverance. I love him and I am proud to have him as my brother.

Dan, Wilma and Danny were our very special friends here in McMurray, PA for many years and we talked everyday, as Dan was full of knowledge, Wilma was a loving friend to us and all the other neighbors, and Olga and I are honored to be the God Parents to Danny. I, too, served in the Army during the Korean Way, so Dan is honored and thanked for his service to our country.
Our ORTHODOX PRAYER is “MEMORY ETERNAL”, and our love and friendship with Wilma and Danny will continue with prayers and communiations. We have a Grandson Gregory, same age as Danny, and we will encourage the two to be everlasting friends.
With Prayers and Love,
JOHN and OLGA RUSINKO and our family and neingbors in McMurray, PA

Dan and I were management trainees and worked together and shared a house with 2 others early in our career in Baltimore, Maryland. Great sense of humor, loved people, and had a curious mind. Loved his son and wife and often talked about them via email. Sure miss his funny emails.
We are having a mass said in his name and will keep him, Mapoi and Danny in our prayers.

Dan and I worked together with Basil on a UN contract. I and everyone else enjoyed Dan as he had
a great sense of humor and he was smarter than all of us, although we tried not to let him know this,
but he knew we knew and he was good with that. One of the reasons he was so liked was that he
never let ego get in the way of anything. I know that his whole life was targeted to you and Danny and
this made him extra special. I wish I had more time with him as I thoroughly enjoyed him.
I am very sad now and will put him into my prayers.
God Bless both of you.
Thanks
Bob

Just had a chance to meet Tito (Uncle) Dan in a very short time, but the experience left a great mark in my heart… it was short & sweet. I’ve seen his goodness through my Tita (Aunt) Mapoi & cousin Danny. His compassionate will always be present through them.
My thoughts & prayers to the whole family, may God continue to embrace each & everyone of you with His comfort & love, especially this time of grief.

Seeing his photo here made me tear up. It finally hit me that Tito Dan is gone. This is how he will always look like to me, smiling and full of life.
I met Tito Dan when I was a little girl of about 7 or 8. He was the superior of my dad at work and I remember being charmed by him. My family liked him even before he became part of our family. He called my brother Champ and he called me Princess. He showered my brother and me with attention and we loved it. He always wrote to us and sent us birthday cards. Eventually he met my beautiful aunt, Tita Wilma (or Mapoi to those very close to her) and their courtship was filled with gatherings of our family. Tito Dan not only got to Tita Wilma’s heart but he also got to everyone else’s. He got the nod of approval of my conservative grandfather and grandmother and the rest is history.
Needless to say, I really have good memories of him from way back. To me he will always be this fun, thoughtful and kind uncle who made me feel liked, important and happy whenever he’s around.
Before his movements became difficult he regularly sent me emails, there would be funny stories, jokes or just simple forwarded stuff that made me smile or laugh and just made me feel remembered.
Tito Dan is this sunshine-y and bright part of my childhood and he will always be remembered as such.
May your soul rest in peace.
We love you.

Dan was one of those people who comes into your life and leaves footprints on your heart. How blessed I was to have been able to care for him over the last few years, and to see how much he loved his family and how loving and dedicated they were to him. God Bless those he leaves behind – I know that while we all know he is in a much better place, his laughter will be missed in this place. Peace and blessings. Margie
