I was a classmate with Steve at Kittrell during the 60’s & early 70’s. It was evident even in grade school that Steve was a leader. Very gifted & talented, I enjoyed being friends with him.

I remember Steve as a very bright young man in my classes at Kittrell School, Rutherford County, TN, in the 60s. He was always cheerful; his smile is a vivid memory after all these years. He was polite, enthusiastic and a joy to know and have as a student.
Sincerely,
Steve Cates

Since my dad was in the Air Force, I was not able to grow up around my cousins. Steve always stood out to me. I had the biggest “cousin crush” on him. We went to visit him when he was in boot camp at Parris Island and I thought he was the coolest guy ever, even with his almost bald head. Then we took him to Woodbury for Papa’s funeral. I was thirteen and he was eighteen. More than twenty years later he came to see me right after I had my son. Still the coolest guy ever. I spent many hours on the phone with him telling me all about Justin. What a big-hearted, generous person Steve was. As sorry as I am that he’s gone, I’m glad he’s at peace in Jesus’ arms now. Bless you Cheryl and Justin for loving him and caring for him.

Every time I saw Steve he would ask me to sell him my red Jeep Wrangler. So one day I did. Steve’s crew did a kitchen remodel for us. Every day he came to check progress. He would just walk in hollering “breakfast is here!”! Cherish the memories.

My condolences go out to Steves family. He was my neighbor for 9 years and its such a heartbreaking lose for his family I am sure. He gave my son his first job at cutting his lawn to help him buy his first bicycle when we moved in our home (my son did a horrible job but Steve didn’t say anything). He will greatly be missed in our neighborhood. God bless you and your family. Rest in Peace.

In life our paths cross with all types of people. Along my journey, I met Steven. This man undoubtedly encompasses and epitomizes the true definition of a friend, a brother, a son, and his greatest accomplishment, a Dad. I bow my head to you Steven, and thank you with every fiber of my soul, for embracing our son and teaching him how to be just like you. For I know that as he follows in your footsteps, I too will be able to rest in peace. You taught Justin things that could only be embraced through the purest, and most genuine love of a Dad. You can rest in peace, my friend, our child will be okay… He learned from the very best.
