Obituary of W. H. Backhaus

W.H. “Jug” Backhaus, 90, passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2015. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Lena Backhaus; his loving wife of 44 years, Aggie Backhaus; brother, Alton Backhaus; and sisters, Lillian Backhaus and Eleanor Lampkin. Jug is survived by his sons, Darren Backhaus and wife, Laura, Kurt Backhaus and girlfriend, Tammy Braswell; grandchildren, Brady and Meredith Backhaus; and a host of many other family and friends. Jug was a proud patriot and veteran who served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He grew up in Rockdale, Texas, and played football in high school. Jug received a scholarship to play football at Sam Houston State University, where he was the co-captain of the football team his senior year and would graduate with his Masters Degree. He started teaching and coaching in Pearland ISD in 1949. He later became a school administrator and retired after 42 years of services. Jug was active in the Lions Club for many years and was instrumental in starting youth baseball in Pearland with Mickey Mark. He was an avid reader and always looking for the next good book to enjoy. Jug was affectionately known to his grandchildren as “Paw Paw” and cherished spending time with them. He made many friends and influenced many young lives throughout his career and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jug's honor to the Pearland Lions Club. A visitation for Jug will be held Sunday, November 22, 2015 from 2:00 until 5:00 pm at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, Texas 77581. The funeral mass will take place Monday, November 23, 2015 at 10:00 am at St. Helen Catholic Church, 2209 Old Alvin Road, Pearland, Texas 77581 with Father James Courville officiating. Interment will follow at SouthPark Cemetery in Pearland, Texas.
