I first met Jack (John W) on August 22nd, 1967 where he was the customer service supervisor for the Village of Northbrook Public Works Department. He was my first supervisor. A patient and kind man who was nice to everyone. Early on in my 40-year career I was feeling unwanted ... being transferred from crew to crew rather quickly. I told Jack I was going to resign that I didn't feel comfortable. He took me out for a malted milk at Ted Gee's restaurant in Northbrook and patiently explained to me that the director had identified me as someone with potential and that he wanted me exposed to every crew and job on a fast track because he had plans for me. Jack told me to be patient and that one day I would be his supervisor. And so it came to pass in time. An office position was created for me where I split time between learning administrative duties and sewer and water tasks as well as snow plowing and countless other PW activities. I ultimately took over as director where I served for 30 of my 40 years of service. I always remembered Jack's kindness and mentoring and he continued to serve as my customer service supervisor (water meters and related services). He was a classy man, devoted employee, friend and husband ... and fortunate to be married to such a nice wife, the love of his life, Muriel. I recall well when the family moved from Northbrook to a beautiful home on Cunningham in Palatine ... with plenty of space for the boys. I knew several of his sons who worked for us seasonally. I was especially fond of his late son John Jr. I'm saddened at Jack's passing .. having just learned of it yesterday (12/7/16). Wish I had known sooner. May he rest in peace and God bless the Slack family.
