Maura Lyn Free
August 15, 1949 - March 16, 2014
Maura Lyn Apfel Free passed away early Sunday morning, March 16, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was a resident of the Houston area for more than three decades.
Ms. Free was born on August 15, 1949 in San Antonio, Texas. Her formal education included a Bachelors of Science in Health Care Services from University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She was a lifelong student of the sciences and took pride to educate others in dentistry and the thirst for knowledge to high school students.
Ms. Free was extremely active in the community and was passionate of helping others in need. She was active and volunteered in organizations such as March of Dimes, Project Joy and Hope, Special Olympics, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the After School Program and Daughters of the King at the St. Johns Episcopal Church in La Porte, TX.
Ms. Free is survived by her husband, Roy; daughters, Elizabeth (Austin, TX) and Naurene (Seabrook, TX); her older brother Buddy (Phoenix, AZ) and her sister Trudy Weaver (Houston, TX). Her survivors also include many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, professional colleagues, former students, and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to direct memorial gifts to Houston SPCA and Project Joy and Hope.
Maura loved so many people and wanted to share this quote with them, "don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened."
