Joseph “Phil” Hopkins, 85, passed away on January 9, 2011. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Josephine Hopkins; brother, Jim Hopkins; and sister, Mary Jane Taylor. Phil is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary; son, Joseph “Joe” Philip Hopkins Jr.; daughters, Connie Witler and her husband Bobby, and Nancy Averitt and her husband Edwin; grandchildren David Hopkins, Cassie Witler, and Mandy Witler. Phil graduated from Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater, Oklahoma with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Over the years, Phil, Mary and the kids moved 28 times with his job as a successful mechanical engineer. Phil devoted much of his life to helping others and was very active in the Boy Scout program. He was a scoutmaster and served on the Boy Scout Council board. Phil was also a Mason and had received his 50 year pin. His service to others also extended to his church, where he was extremely active and served as an usher for many years until his health would no longer permit him to stand. Phil was in Class #14 of the Pearland Citizens Police Academy and had been active in the alumni association for many years. He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed reading and ballroom dancing. Phil was a wonderful husband, father and Grandpa that will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. A memorial service for Phil will be on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 10:30 am at First United Methodist Church at 2314 North Grand Blvd., Pearland, TX 77581 with Dr. Bob Joiner and Dr. Phyllis Riney officiating.
